Hydrated sodium borate (borax)
Borax is a naturally occurring mineral that is chalky white with a sweet alkaline taste.
Uses: It is a component of many cosmetics, and enamel glazes. It is also used as a natural laundry booster, multipurpose cleaner, fungicide, disinfectant, fire retardant, as an anti-fungal compound for fiberglass, as an insecticide.
Effects: Acute: associated with skin, eye, or respiratory irritation. The estimated lethal dose (ingested) for adults is 15-20 grams; less than 5 grams can kill a child or pet. For this reason, borax should not be used around food. Chronic: over exposure to borax may impair fertility or cause damage to an unborn child.
