Hydrochloric acid

Hydrochloric acid is the solution of hydrogen chloride in water; it is clear and colorless, highly acidic.

Uses: petroleum production, ore reduction, food processing, pickling, and metal cleaning. It is found in the stomach in dilute form. Also used in some cleaning products.

Found in: cleaning products such as toilet bowl cleaners, PVC, polyurethane, food additives, and found naturally in gastric acid.

Effects: Acute: liquid and mist can cause severe burning, and fumes are highly corrosive to lung and skin tissue. Chronic: may cause corrosion of teeth. Due to the highly corrosive nature of acute exposure, long term exposure is rare.
