Petroleum distillates

The by-products of refined crude oil by distillation; they are volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Includes the lighter liquid hydrocarbons including petroleum ether, naphtha, mineral oil, mineral spirits; the heavier distillates asphalt and paraffin wax; and the gaseous distillates benzene, toluene, xylene, and naphthenes.

Uses: removal of heavy oil and grease, tar, and waxes.

Found in: hair conditioner, lip gloss, air fresheners, furniture polish, stainless steel cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides, among many other things.

Effects: Acute: the toxicity of petroleum distillates and other hydrocarbons affects the respiratory system. Aspiration of small amounts of these chemicals directly into the lung, or into the lung during vomiting of an ingested chemical, can cause chemical pneumonia, pulmonary damage, and death. Chronic: it is a developmental/reproductive toxin, and possible carcinogen.
