There are many ways to make our homes more energy efficient and comfortable, especially in the cold days of winter. Well insulated walls and attic, high efficiency windows, windows with plastic sheet covers or a strip of “weatherseal” to form a tight fit when the windows are closed, foam cutouts placed behind outlets and door sweeps at each entry will do wonders for drafty rooms.
All these steps help ensure there is less outside air breezing through our homes; which is great for the energy bill. Ahhh, I can feel the difference already – I hate to be cold, and I love saving energy! What these steps also ensure, is that we are potentially breathing in more toxins than we would with a drafty house.
In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors. US Consumer Product Safety Commission
So, what can we do about it? Keep toxins to a minimum.
When doing home improvement projects, utilize some of the vast products available with low or no toxicity. Stores such as the Green Depot make these supplies more accessible and mainstream than ever before.
Enjoy the great outdoors. Fresh air will help clear the body, and reduce exposure in addition to keeping in touch with nature.
Use safe household cleaning products – you know I’m going to shamelessly plug Sound Earth products here! Seriously, typical household cleaners contain numerous toxic chemicals that pose a threat to human and animal health. Benzene, a known carcinogen, is found in numerous household cleaning products including polishes and waxes, but can also be found in some craft supplies, paint thinner and tobacco smoke (it’s never too late to quite that habit).
So while you’re meticulously sealing up your home, be sure to take precautions by using safer products. It’s just the smart way to go!
